Theme Migrator: when to use it

Our Theme Migrator helps move your Section Store sections and their saved settings from one theme to another.

It works best for specific pages or templates, especially when only a few Section Store sections need to be moved.

Best use case

Theme Migrator is a good option when:

• you want to move specific Section Store sections to another theme
• the source and target themes already have similar templates
• only a few pages or templates need attention
• you want to avoid manually rebuilding those sections

When not to use it

Theme Migrator is not the best option for a full theme upgrade.

If you are updating your theme to a newer version, the safer and recommended route is to use Shopify’s own theme updater in your Shopify admin.

Why this matters

A full theme upgrade can be more complex because:

• the new theme version may not have the same templates
• some JSON templates may be different or missing
• not all theme code and customizations are handled the same way
• Theme Migrator only works with Section Store sections, not every part of your theme

Recommended workflow

If you are upgrading your theme version:

1. First use Shopify’s native theme updater
2. Then check whether all your Section Store sections carried over properly
3. If a few pages or templates are missing Section Store sections, use Theme Migrator for those specific cases
